Much has been stated in the papers not long ago about the bingo industry being hurt as a consequence of the anti smoking law in England. Things have become so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded massive tax breaks to assist in keeping the industry from going bankrupt. But does the online version of this traditional game provide a escape, or will it never compare to its bricks and mortar opposite?
Bingo is an enduring game usually enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. However the game of late had seen a recent return in appeal with younger members of society deciding to go to the bingo parlours in place of the discos on a weekend. This is all about to be reversed with the legislating of the anti cigarette law around United Kingdom.
Players will no longer be allowed to puff on cigarettes whilst marking numbers. Starting in the summer of 2007 every public place will not be allowed to permit cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo parlours, which are possibly the most popular places where folks enjoy smoking.
The outcome of the cigarette ban can already be felt in Scotland where cigarettes are already not permitted in the bingo parlors. Profits have dropped and the industry is literally fighting for to stay alive. But where did the players go? Obviously they haven’t forgotten this ancient game?
The answer is online. Players are now realizing that they can enjoy bingo in front of their computer at the same time enjoying a cocktail and smoke and in the end, have a chance at huge prizes. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened bordering on perfect with the ban on smoking.
Of course playing on the web is unlikely to replace the communal part of heading over to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of people the governing edicts have left a good many bingo enthusiasts with no option.
